Melasma mustache is real. If you are finding that those summers of your youth spent basking in the rays of the sun are now haunting you as you age, Aurora Med Spa can help.
What is Melasma?
Melasma, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, is an unfortunate skin disorder where brown to gray-brown patches show up usually on the face, especially on the upper lip. It is very common during pregnancy and while using birth control as it’s derived from hormones. But genetics, ethnicity, medications all can also play a factor, as well as sun exposure!
The sun can tan your body and give a nice glow to your skin, but it also creates damage building under the top layers. As we age our skin reveals our sun-loving past. If you ever want to see what is underneath? Request our Visia consultation.
For sun spots Aurora offers the laser treatment IPL foto facial. It pulls pigmentation to the surface where it then flakes off, revealing a fresh skin layer. While IPL is superb for the basic sun damaged skin, heat from the laser can actually worsen melasma. Therefore, with any laser treatment to the face you will need to be cautious and seek the advice of professionals.
The best way to prevent your melasma from worsening is to protect your skin and prevent it from the rays of the sun by wearing a broad spectrum SPF sunscreen every day.
There is chemical and physical defense sunscreen. Physical is where it actually reflects the UV rays and chemical is where the rays absorb into the skin but the chemical destroys them. Skin Medica took lead in this category and produces a sun screen that not only provides broad spectrum UV protection but also from infrared rays. This is huge for people who battle melasma.
Microneedling is a way to reduce pigmentation. This is a form of trauma to stimulate collagen and growth factors to regenerate new skin. It is ideal for a multitude of problems but definitely for pigment.
If you are a candidate, a topical application of hydroquinone, found in Obagi NuDerm products helps correct hyper-pigmented skin. Also, Epionce makes MelanoLyte Skin Brightening System, with a powerful nightly-use, botanical-based product to help brighten and correct the visible appearance of irregular pigmentation and dark spots.
